Kayaking, Exploring, and Hunting!

October 21-24, 2026

We will be wrapping up our time here in Minocqua tomorrow. We will be sad to leave because we have had such a delightful time here. The scenery is amazing. We have had so much fun we kind of forgot to take pictures, so I’m combining a few days.

On Wednesday, we went kayaking on Lake Cunard. Arriving at the lake, you only see the typical beautiful northwoods lake. Once on the water, it gets even better! The main, round lake has a narrow channel that leads to a smaller pond sized pool. From the pond-sized spot, I kayaked up a channel that became quite narrow so that I used my paddle as a pole because there wasn’t enough room to paddle. This led to a perfectly enchanting pool about the size of a very large swimming pool. I returned to the pond and found a second channel and followed it to an active beaver dam! Later, I looked at the map. I think that channel might do all the way to the next lake. Wish I had a photo for you! One from the internet will have to suffice:

On Thursday, Ted went hunting with his new friend that he met at the gas station. From all accounts he had a great time. He came home with more woodcocks and lots of stories. Maybe later, he can add some to the blog…

A couple evenings we drove to check out more grouse habitat. We so lots of grouse, but didn’t bring one home. They are wiley little creatures. We walked down a few trails and checked stuff out.

We also drove down to Rhinelander to check out a potential place to stay on our next trip this way. There is a house to rent right on the Wisconsin River at Thunder Lake. The internet pictures are all blocked, but you can google it. It will be wonderful to stay there and we hope to have friends and family join us next Fall. We also found the most wonderful bookstore (surprise!). We brought home a bag of books (surprise!)

Tomorrow we head to the Wisconsin Dells. Until then….
