Illinois: Starved Rock State Park

October 16-17, 2026

We have seen YouTube posts about Starved Rock State Park in Illinois for years and it has become a bucket list destination for us. It did not disappoint. The drive to the park is through typical midwest farmland – rolling hills, picturesque barns and silos, quiet countryside. Then the road suddenly drops down several hundred feet. It’s pretty dramatic change in terrain. Starved Rock is beside the Illinois River. The French were the first Europeans to explore and build in the area in the late 1500’s. I can only imagine how they felt about the canyons and bluffs and buttes.

Ted treated me to a nice lunch at the lodge before we got back to traveling. We still had several hours to go.

Tomorrow, Wisconsin!
