South Dakota Part 2

June 9-12: Gorgeous drives, Visiting old friends, Wild weather

Needles Highway in Custer State Park is remarkable. Words don’t fully describe it, so here are a few images:

It’s intense!

The road had two-traffic and a one-way tunnel. I ended up walking through the tunnel to stop on-coming traffic.

Yep! Intense!

The scenic road ends and Sylvan Lake. We stopped to take a hike.

Just for fun, can you spot the twins?

Green Subarus with Toppers are actually common.

One of the highlights of the trip was visiting with an old work buddy of Ted’s. OK, Matt isn’t old, but Ted worked with him in Vegas about 15 years ago. We had dinner with Matt and his family at a local food truck. Matt and his wife have 4 delightful children and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit it with them. Of course, we neglected to take pictures. (Grrr) It would have been fun to have pictures of them. At least I could find an image of a Peanut Butter and Jelly Hamburger on the internet. Apparently they are really good. To each his own!

After we moved to the Campground in Spearfish, we spent one whole day at camp. I simply refused to get in the car. We did swim in the pool and I did several loads of laundry. We weren’t completely lazy that day, but almost!

Another day we drove to see a local lake and then up into the hills just to explore. Before we could return to camp, our iPhones started blaring Tornado and Hail Storm warnings. We seem to attract exciting weather.

I don’t know if the tornados materialized but the hail certainly did!

They said golf ball sized hail. Not quite that big, but certainly impressive.

We will definitely return to South Dakota someday.
