Nebraska

June 7, 2022 Whew, lots of driving!

Nebraska is another state we expected to find flat and boring, but really enjoyed. There were a few rather sad and depressed areas, but, all in all, our time in Nebraska was quite enjoyable.

We spent the morning touring some Lewis and Clark sites. We were crossing and recrossing the Iowa/Nebraska border. So I’m not really sure which state we were in.

We saw a keel boat replica and the memorial tower for Sergeant Charles Floyd overlooking the Missouri River. Sergeant Floyd was the only member of the Corps of Discovery to die on the journey. He had appendicitis.

Beautiful Nebraska landscapes:

The clouds were just as interesting as the landscape!!

We stopped a Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge:

We spent the night in Springview, the County Seat of Kaya Paha County. The town has 242 people and the County only about 900. The population is twice what it was a hundred years ago. Here is our campsite which is across the street from the school. Very peaceful sunset.

Our main destination in Nebraska was the Museum of the Fur Trade in Chadron. It is a world-class display of Native American and Fur Trapper memorabilia. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit:

Outside of the museum, original trading post and cache for the Bordeaux site had been painstakingly recreated. Very interesting and worth the trip.
