Wisconsin

May 23-26, 2022 Door County and Port Washington

We visited Wisconsin when our kids were little and we loved it! We were looking forward to seeing it again. The drive down from the Upper Peninsula was long, so we found a random state park on Lake Michigan just at the “base” of Door County just before dark. In the morning, we found that the park is quite lovely (and has hot showers!) I’m not much into geography, so I need pictographs to remember where I am. Door County is a peninsula which is the finger pointing up into Lake Michigan. It is very scenic and bucolic. Our drive up to the tip of the peninsula and back was beautiful. We stopped at a few places for pictures and touristing (it may not be a real word, but is definitely a real activity). We bought stuff and ate ice cream.

Look, my guy has learned to grow one of those three-day beards like the movie stars have. Actually, look at the grins. We love Wisconsin!

We didn’t have an actual plan for where to stay the night. Both of us were pretty tired. Ted had read there were some special birds at Port Washington.

We headed there, and it was getting late, and starting to rain, and the town was pretty, and the GPS was being slow, and we couldn’t figure out what we wanted to do, and…Some poor guy was following us through town as all this was happening. Ted found a place to pull over and let the guy go by. He pulled up beside and Ted said, “I guess, we are lost. We are trying to find a hotel that isn’t too expensive”. The man got out of his car, gave us two choices of good hotels and ones he didn’t think we should try, and then proceeded to give us directions to the nearest one. What a nice guy! Midwesterners are like that.

We headed to the hotel and realized why we weren’t able to find it. The hotel had been sold the week before, so the old signs had been removed but the new signs had not been put up yet. Since the forecast was for two days of rain and we were both worn out, we booked for 2 days. During a break in the weather we went down to Port Washington to look for birds and shop. It was a nice couple of days, but not too many pictures.

Port Washington is pretty. The Catholic Church can be seen from pretty much anywhere in town.
Coal plant in Port Washington. Looks like clean energy to me.

After two days in a hotel, we were still tired. We were able to get into our timeshare at Galena two days early, so we headed to Illinois.
