WICHITA, Wichita, wichitata

April 30 – Botanica, Blackberries, Birding

The title of today’s post is a take on an old camp song. Wichita reminds me of simpler, more wholesome times. The whole city is free of litter, has beautiful subdivisions (many of which surround a lake or pond, and a downtown designed to appeal to the whole family. Truly a city representing the heartland of America.

Really, if you are tired of the wicked-wokeness of theme parks, you could have a great family vacation in Wichita. There is a zoo, a hands on science museum, art museum, interactive wildlife park (hand feed lemurs and pet a sloth), a recreated 1880’s cow-town with 40+ living history buildings and several more fun attractions.

We went to the botanical garden, thinking it would be pleasant. We were WOWed! The hardest part is deciding which images to include. Take a deep breath: here goes!

I’ll start with a Peony in honor of A. Char and U. Donald
The obligatory fountain. Imagine this when the roses are blooming!
The Orchid show was pretty incredible.
So pretty!
We were just in time to see some tulips. The sculptures in garden were wonderful.
Such joy!
One more tulip field
The Children’s Garden was magnificent! This tree house was so fun!!
And huge!
The sleeping troll’s back was a hill the kids could slide down. The entire botanical garden is really a gem.

After the Botanical Garden, we needed some ice cream, OF COURSE. We found a place just north of town that is a blackberry and goat farm. They sell blackberry gelato and cheeses. We met the owner and learned about his special pruning techniques for his blackberries and a little about the cheese-making process (which sounds hard). Blackberry yogurt gelato made from goats milk is yummy.

We finished our great day with a birding trip at a local park.

It’s almost as if the park were made just for us.
