April 29 – Colorado to Wichita, KS
Today we stopped in Dodge City on our way across the Great Plains. Funny, but as a Californian, I’ve never thought of Kansas as the Wild, Wild, West. Clearly it was! We toured the Boot Hill Museum. It was very well done and we enjoyed learning about lawmen Bat Masterson, Wyatt Earp and singer Dora Hand. Also, Ted was able to fulfill a Bucket List goal as we left town by saying, “Let’s get the heck out of Dodge.” I bought him the tee shirt to prove it.

Once we were back on the road, we didn’t find much to look at except the beautiful cloud formations:

We finally, FINALLY, arrived at our next campsite in Wichita about 7:00PM.
Please forgive me now, but I’m about to brag. Ted and I have had a standing competition for over 30 years to see which of us will be the first to see an Oriole each Spring. I have won the competition maybe 5 times in our marriage, but this Spring, I WON!!!! Ted was moving the car as we were setting up camp and turned the corner to find me doing my happy dance. He knew immediately that this year was not his year for bragging rights. Of course, he had to complain that it was an “unconfirmed siting”. Sour grapes.

This year it’s a Baltimore Oriole, but when we are in California, it is a Bullock’s Oriole. As you can tell from the stock photos, they are beautiful harbingers of spring.
Since it was getting late and windy, we opted to go out to dinner. I started to get nervous as I watched the storm coming in. Those gorgeous clouds from earlier today?

So, we did the logical thing (NOT). We left the brick restaurant building to go to our fiberglass mini trailer. We clearly didn’t learn the lesson of the Three Little Pigs. Good thing our campsite was west of town because east of town, the tornado touched down.
