The Adventure Begins!

DAY 1: From Home to the Loneliest Highway (Hwy 50, NV)

Happy Easter! The miracle of the Lord’s resurrection cannot be topped of course, but we did have a minor miracle at our house. We managed to get on the road before 9AM WITHOUT any raised voices! Danny packed the car and we were off! We stopped in Quincy to get cash from the ATM. Since we wanted some small bills, we bought a banana at the Safeway. Our first expenditure: 32 cents. If only the rest of the trip could be so economical!

Today was just what we needed; plenty of sunshine and wide-open spaces. Highway 50 between Fernley and Ely definitely earns it’s reputation as the loneliest road. There are salt flats where bored people write their names with rocks on the dirt, plenty of hills, a couple cows and that’s about it. It is so isolated, the big deal is to hang shoes from a tree. We didn’t stop to take a picture but, here is a stock photo of the famous shoe tree someone else has posted.

We traveled about 150 miles on Highway 50 and camped at Hickison Petroglyph Recreation Area just passed Austin. It’s a free campground, so I guess we are continuing the economical trend. This a pretty cool spot with great rock formations and expansive views. We actually were able to take a quick walk and prepare dinner before dark. A lovely first day!!

Beautiful rock formations just 100 ft from our campsite

Night night, sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite, I Love You, God Bless You, Sweet Dreams, See you in the morning.
